| THE
3RD AND THE MORTAL |
This band I have known about for some time, though they change singers a lot. This is ethereal, emotional doom, soothing with a female voice and melodic tunes to relax to. A must for the doom lover who doesn't like thrash or death style! The way Kari sings on the earlier releases is Heaven to the ears, she is not with the band any longer, but you be the judge. |
| THE
69 EYES |
Okay all you closet goth fans. This band combines the music of The Cult and the singing style of Type O Negative, a dash of this and a spritz of that, and you have some very interesting gothic rock for those days you don't feel like banging your head (if there is such a day, of course). They receive honorable mention on my site for sounding a bit like Type O Negative. |
| ABDULLAH |
This is a small doom metal band consisting of Jeff Shirilla who plays the drums while singing vocals and Alan Seibert handles all the guitar work. If you love Sabbath, Sleep, and slow melodic crunching doom, this is the band for you. |
| AFTER
FOREVER |
This music has such passion and haunting melodies that I find myself hitting the replay button after a song is over. They use a great female soprano that can hold a tune better than the rest, also male "death" vocals to sweeten the pot. With great use of keyboards and choirs, this band is my new favorite. Their song "Black Tomb" is by far my favorite song by this band. |
| AJATTARA |
My God I love this band from Finland! Why is it so much great metal comes from this magical place? VERY extreme mid-tempo metal with screaming vocals sung in Finnish. One of the members of this band is from the ever wonderful, Amorphis, but they do not sound like Amorphis of today, more like Amorphis of yesterday, but just a bit. Ajattara have their own unique sound, and even though most of us can't sing along, I try! The song "Agras" caught me between the eyes and I still have the mark! |
| ALASTIS |
I found out about this band quite by accident on a compilation CD and fell in love with the melodies and their "old Tiamat" sound. Heavy, crunching guitars, semi-clean vocals with some keyboards thrown in. I actually stumbled across this beauty "The Other Side" in the used CD store. Someone gave up this gem and it's all mine! Find it if you can. I also just got "Revenge" and it kicks ass! |
| AMORPHIS |
A real gem in my book of doom metal, though they have changed over the years, they still rock, though now they are more melodic with a kick. I strongly recommend "Tales of the Thousand Lakes" and "Elegy" for these two discs are by far my favorites! In some of their recent works, they have incorporate horns into their music which for me is the kiss of death. Horns do not belong in heavy metal, in my opinion. |
| ANATHEMA |
This would have to be one of my top three all-time favorite bands. Their early stuff was doomy, heavy, pungent. But now they have cleaned up the vocals, keeping their ever-present excellent melodies, I swear this band keeps getting better and better! Even die-hard metal fans still love this band even though their newer stuff is not what I would call metal. It's just so damned appealing, you would have to be deaf not to appreciate this band. "Judgement" is by far my favorite CD by this band, check it out if you haven't already! |
| ARCH
ENEMY |
Not having been a fan of this band for long, it's my understanding that they have been around a long time and have gone through their fair share of vocalists. Now, however, they have found a very brutal singer, death style, to go nicely with their melodic death metal. The surprise is, the singer is actually a female who can belt out the death vox like the boys. "Ravenous" is an excellent tune to get you started on your Arch Enemy journey. |
| ARCTURUS |
Someone referred to this band as "avante garde metal" and I must agree. Their release "The Sham Mirrors" is very eclectic, heavily laden with pianos (think Samael) with great vocals. Hard to describe, easy to listen to. |
| AS
DIVINE GRACE |
This is yet another band that has driven me to the points of serenity and wonderment. Their release "Lumo" is truly a masterpiece, all female vocals, very melodic style, but not heavy or thrashy. Not recommended for the heavy metal fan and more for the ethereal. |
| ASHES
YOU LEAVE |
A friend from a far away land made me a tape with various doom bands on it and this was one. They are great, sounding a lot like Celestial Season (from the "Solar Lovers" days) but with clean vox. "The Passage Back of Life" is very melodic with, yes, violins, YES! I found this treasure at my local store so it shouldn't be too hard to find. |
| BEAUTY
IN DARKNESS: ALL THE VOLUMES! |
These are doom metal compilations where you get to taste many different doom metal flavors such as Theatre of Tragedy, Anathema, Cradle of Filth, and more! I have up to the 5th Volume and may they keep making more! |
| BESEECH |
Check out Beseech's "From a Bleeding Heart", this is ethereal, dark, gloomy, melodic, crunching, doom metal at it's finest. The female vocals thrown in on some parts and the cellos, violins, and pianos make it most wonderful! |
| BETRAY
MY SECRETS |
This is a side project of members of the band Darkseed. I really don't like Darkseed, that is why they are not listed in this site. But Betray my Secrets is something out of this world! It has a Native American base, chants, great whispering, heavy guitars, it has it all! I adore the song "Forgive Them". |
| BLACK
SABBATH |
What kind of doom site would this be if I didn't mention the Grandfathers, the ones who started it all. With Ozzy or Dio, this band has been around a long time and I have loved them since I was a child. If you have never heard of Black Sabbath, SHAME ON YOU. |
| BLINDMANN |
Another treasure out of Finland, Blindmann capture the stoner-type doom genre pretty good. With clean vocals and heavy guitars, one can really hear the Sabbath influence. Fans of Cathedral will appreciate this band. |
BLOODBATH |
This is true death metal to the core, no pretty synths, so clean vocals, no tunes about love, but dirty, bloody, and brutal death metal and has great melody (if you can believe it) that will be sure to please the most die-hard death metal fans. "Ressurection Through Carnage" features Mikael Akerfeldt as its vocalist (from Opeth) which is a great album, however, their latest effort, "Nightmares Made Flesh" features vocalist Peter Tägtgren and is a must-have for any metal fan of any genre! |
| BLUT
AUS NORD |
These mysterious black metallers are from France and do not do concerts, nor show their faces. What they do, however, is create some extremely disturbing metal that defies explanation. Imagine a psycho ward with white barren walls and some "patients" wailing away on guitars with no ryhme or reason, that is Blut Aus Nord in a nutshell. A must have for anyone looking for something "different." |
| CANDLEMASS |
This is a band that came highly recommended from frequent viewers of my site and they were right, this band rocks! Great vocals and heavy guitars, "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" is my favorite by this band, get it if you can! |
| CATHEDRAL |
You can definitely hear the Black Sabbath influence in this band, in fact, they have used Tony Iommi's axe skills on "Carnival Bizarre", which is a damn good CD and the track "Night of the Seagulls" will blow your mind. They have evolved into more "hard rock" than doom but they still have a great style, check them out! I have recently found "Forest of Equilibrium" and let me tell you doomers, this kicks ass! The song "Serpent Eve" is the epitome of doom, slow and crunching. That disc is an old one, so have fun trying to find it, it took me a long time! |
| CELESTIAL
SEASON |
Now this band sings to my soul. "Solar Lovers" is a masterpiece that every doom lover should own. This band combines death grunt vocals with very low guitars and mix in wonderful cellos and violins, believe me, this is a sound that is Valhalla! Their other release "Sonic Orb" has taken on a groovy style, 70's mostly, the doom is just about gone from this group. |
| CEMETERY |
This band I found quite by accident in a used record store. The cover looked cool and the name of the band caught my eye, so I took a chance and low and behold, GREAT DOOM! The disc I got was "Black Vanity" and it rocks! Very melodic and heavy with strong vocals, not death vocals. Some songs are more rockin and some are more doom, but all in all, they never quite speed up their tempo enough to be just heavy metal. |
| CEMETERY
OF SCREAM |
First of all, I LOVE the name of this band from Poland! Their release "Melancholy" is a very slow, interesting doom recording with a mixture of female and male vox, clean and not-so-clean vocals, and it is just what it says, it is very melancholy. Great piano work and a lengthy intro "Prologue" that is haunting in its simple nature with a sexy male voice speaking instead of singing. |
| CORONER |
Excellent extreme metal at its finest! In my opinion, this band sounds like a cross between Annihilator and Slayer. They do, however, have their own style that shatters glass. My favorite songs by this band are "Grin (Nails Hurt)", "Paralyzed, Mesmerized", and they do a killer cover of the Beatles classic "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Great metal to crank in your car at a red light and scare all the old ladies and "wannabe rappers". |
| CREMATORY |
I wouldn't necessarily call this doom, but it's hard and heavy if that's the way you like it. Someone sent me a tape with a Crematory song on it and it was more doomy, I've got to write him and find out which disc that song was on. "Awake" is good, but not as doomy as I would like. Kinda like the new Paradise Lost sound. |
| CRADLE
OF FILTH |
What metal collection is complete without a little Cradle of Filth I ask you? This is extreme bloody metal to scare little children by! Dani Filth screams out these very intricate lyrics to some of the most alluring sounds you will ever hear. This band falls into many categories, trash, death, black, doom, you name it, it's not for the weak at heart. Check out "From the Cradle to Enslave" my favorite MCD, and "Cruelty and the Beast" is a must have. |
| CRYPTAL
DARKNESS |
Cryptal Darkness delivers incredibly slow, beautiful, funeral doom using violins and all the other ingredients that cooks up a great doomy confection. When My Dying Bride's Martin Powell (the violinist) left the band, he lent his talents to Cryptal Darkness and you can recognize his certain "style" he brings to the concept. They use vocal stylings similar to Celestial Season, no throaty growls, just a tortured man basically, talking the lyrics. Great doom, I just can't say enough. |
| DARK
TRANQUILITY |
If you like your metal hard, sprinkled with ambient moments, you will love Dark Tranquility. The CD "Haven" and the title track are wonderful. I have yet to listen to their other stuff, but I will, in time. This outfit reminds me of Samael in some ways, gravelly vocals, some synths, excellent melodies. A keeper in my book. |
| DECORYAH |
This band is hard to describe but I will try. They too use violins and heavy guitars but throw in female voice-overs and some keyboard work that blends in wonderfully with the pieces. An acquired taste, not for the headbanger, but great to relax to and just get into! |
