PENANCE
Another doom fan sent me yet another tape with various favs on it and Penance's "Visions" off of their disc "Parallel Corners" was on it and I fell in love. This band has a style all their own. Clean vocals and some nice guitar work with great bass lines. Very "stoner-like" in my opinion.
RAPTURE
I heard the song "Farewell" and I instantly fell in love with the doom-laden, slow paced beauty of this music. So I went out and bought the CD, "Songs for the Withering". It seems that "Farewell" was the only true doom song on the album. While still decent, I would like to hear more doomy stuff from this band because it's clear they know how to do it right!
RAS ALGETHI
If any of you out there are Decoryah fans, than this band is for you.  Very dreamy, still metallic, soothing.  "Oneiricon - The White Hypnotic" is a doomy dream.
ROTTING CHRIST
Okay Samael fans, Rotting Christ is for you! Great melodies and various whispers, screaming, etc. make up this band's sound. Intricate arrangements with some interesting songs, some of which, "Art of Sin" and "Sleep the Sleep of the Angels" that are by far my favorite songs by this band.
RUNEMAGICK
Runemagick has to be one of my new favorite bands this year. We can't have too many doom/death bands, now can we? Very "razor edge" doom, melodic and slightly "stoner" in it's style, Runemagick ties it all together with death vocals and those lovely "long" songs that flow effortlessly into one another, giving the impression of one long song. Excellent and highly recommended.
SAINT VITUS
I have been told about this band since I started this site so I thought I would check them out. They are somewhat "godfathers" of doom like Black Sabbath. They sound a lot like Sabbath, even the singing is similar. Pure metal, slow and crunching, and great for stoners.
SADISTIK EXEKUTION
Very interesting extreme noise! I only like a few songs by this band because most of the music I have heard from them has been VERY fast and brutally thrashy. But the song "Koffin White" is a very cool tune. It's something you would hear being played by a madman as he slaughtered a basement full of hitchhikers. Hard to explain, you gotta hear it for yourself! Take the chance and venture into that basement!
SAMAEL
Samael are very heavy metal, no wimpy stuff here, gravelly vocals, hard hitting, mid-tempo. They won my heart when I heard their cover of "I Love the Dead" the Alice Cooper classic. They do it "their way" and it is still a great tune! All of Samael's CD's are great. Take your pick, you won't be sorry.
SATURNUS
Oh, this was recommended to me by a very reliable source and what a gem!  Slow, melodic doom, in the same vein as Lacrimas Profundere.  Very grown up and well put together, this band embodies all that is pure and melancholy. "Martyre" is definitely one of my favorite CD's . A true doom lover MUST get their hands on "Paradise Belongs to You", it's an older release by this band and it is a MASTERPIECE. The song "Christ Goodbye" has to be my all time favorite doom song. It is everything I love in doom.
SATYRICON
This is a two-man outfit. Satyr performs all the singing, guitars, synths, you name it and Frost plays the drums. On their 2004 album "Volcano," they were going for a more simple feel, a "return to the roots black metal experience," and I would have to say they succeeded. Satyricon prefer to keep their music black, however, though they can get quite speedy and fast, their riffs are known to slow a bit and can be quite melodic. Satyr's vocals are a high pitched wail, however, he is still understandable so you can scream along if you like.
SEASONS OF THE WOLF
I heard about this band while in a chat room talking with one of the members (the lead guitarist) and he sent me one of their CDs and it kicks ass! You probably can't find them in stores yet, but go to my links page and follow their link and see for yourself. They are very heavily influenced by 70's rock with a 90's twist, well worth a listen!  New Age Metal really warms my bones these days!  Let's help this band from Florida become big time, and knock the crap out of the Backstreet Boys! (that was for you Skullywolf).
SERPENT RISE
These guys are from Brazil I believe, and it is crunching doom with some nice melodies thrown it there to make it interesting.
SHAPE OF DESPAIR
This is suffocating, VERY slow, melodic doomy metal. Mixing male and female vocals, they will please the die-hard doom metal fan. My favorite album is "Illusion's Play." Put this one on in the dark and ride the music.
SIEBENBURGEN
Okay, I was lied to once again.  I read that this band sounded like a cross between In the Woods and Theatre of Tragedy.  NOT NOT NOT.  They sound like Cradle of Filth but FASTER if you can imagine! Plus, all the lyrics aren't even in English so I can't yell along.
SIX FEET UNDER
This extreme death band is fronted by none other than Chris Barnes of Cannibal Corpse. If you know anything about Cannibal Corpse you know how brutal the vocals are and the music shreds your insides like you swallowed a rabid rat. Well, Six Feet Under is like that yes, but the CD "Warpath" is a side-step from their normal ways, and contains more of a crunchy, stoner-doom feel. Chris Barnes' vocals are still rough, but sung in more of a Gorefest style, where you can actually understand the grunts, yes, those are words he is saying!
THE SINS OF THY BELOVED
Oh my, what a lucky day it was when I found this treasure!  As you know, I am a huge fan of Theatre of Tragedy, Within Temptation, and Celestial Season, well, Sins of Thy Beloved are those all wrapped up into one!  This band has it all for the extreme doom lover, violins, female vox with male death vox, great melodies, gut wrenching guitars, ahhh, the pleasure of it!
SLEEP
Now this band really knows how to rock the old fashioned way! They really have that Sabbath sound! It was described to me as "slug-paced stoner doom metal" and I think that fits quite nicely! The disc I have is "Sleep's Holy Mountain" and believe me, it kicks ass!
SLOW HORSE
Get your mud mucking shoes ready friends.  This band out of NYC has got all the elements of good "old fashioned" doom and then some.  It is very low, crunching, slow headbanging stuff to make your eyes roll up into your head, kinda like the Indian they have on their cover.  They also do a kick ass cover of the love song by Chris Isaak "Wicked Game", sounds better done with crunching guitars than Chris Isaak doing that gay yodel he does!  I'm glad these guys turned to music, you wouldn't believe what they USED to do before that! (haha).  But seriously, if you like Saint Vitus, Sleep, and yes, Old Black Sabbath, you will LOVE Slow Horse.
SOLITUDE AETURNUS
This band was recommended to me by many people and I'm glad I listened! I bought "Downfall" which is not all that doomy but I have heard some of their stuff from older discs and found "Into the Depths of Sorrow" which kicks ass! Luckily, while perusing some used cds I ran across Solitude's "Through the Darkest Hour" and I can't believe anyone would give it up! Now this is more like it! VERY doomy and mournful with excellent vocals and melodies! I'm glad I took the time to look!
SWALLOW THE SUN
Finland has been responsible for many of my favorite bands and Swallow the Sun has now become one of my top 10! Slow, crunching doom, death vocals, excellent melodies, I could go on all day. This doom is pure, razor edged and beautiful. Fans of My Dying Bride, Cryptal Darkness, and Unholy will love Swallow the Sun.
SUNN O)))
This band is so hard to describe. It is mostly noises and voices, not many melodies to be found here. Extreme doom fans love this band for the sheer strangeness and slow dirge of sound.
THEATRE OF TRAGEDY
Theatre of Tragedy have similarities to My Dying Bride and Celestial Season but with some great female vocals from Liv Kristine to eerie it up a bit. Their older efforts such as "A Rose for the Dead" and "Velvet Darkness They Fear" contain some very haunting stuff. They have released a couple more recent CDs, "Aegis" and "Musique" and I'm sorry to say they have dropped the violins and don't even sound like the TOT of old. Their new stuff could be played on any alternative radio station now, I'm afraid.
THERION
Ever hear of "choir metal"?  Well kids, here it is!  This is great stuff and very different from anything you have ever heard.  It takes extreme doomy metal, violins, pianos, all sung with a choir!  Some songs are sung by a lone female voice which is wonderful!  I love this band and am so glad that one of you made me a tape with this band on it!  I have ordered more of their stuff but beware.  Their older stuff is death metal.  My favorite disc by this band is by far "Vovin", a must have in your dark collection!

THIS EMPTY FLOW

Someone who visited my site made a tape of his favorites on it and a cut from "Magenta Skycode" was on it.  Very ethereal, melodic, and slightly "modern" but still good.  Not heavy and not really metal, but relaxing mood music to soothe the soul.
TIAMAT
Tiamat is more technical doom if there is such a thing but that's the only way I can describe them. Clean vox and great guitars with keyboards and slow melodies, great stuff! I have recently acquired some of their older stuff like "Wild Honey" and "Clouds" and let me tell you it is some great stuff! They do get mellower with age, but they still have a style that is all their own! The older stuff is more heavy with crunchy vox, not death vox, but, well, find those CDs and find out for yourself!  If you liked "A Deeper Kind of Slumber" you will love "Skeletron Skeleton", same sound, kinda dark, good stuff.
TRAIL OF TEARS

Typical doom metal, death vocals with a female soprano and keyboards. Good melodies, very mature doom metal. I recommend them!

TRISTANIA
My friends, it couldn't get any better than this.   This is one band that will go down in history as one of my all time favorites.  It is a cross between Theatre of Tragedy and Therion.   "Widows Weeds" and "Beyond the Veil" are a MUST if you are into intricate, bombastic doom metal!
TRISTITIA
I can't seem to stop listening to this band! They are doom, very much so, with two types of vocals, a low male voice and a higher screechy male voice, very cool. Their tones are low and sludgy with an abundance of style. This stuff is roll your eyes up into your head and gently rock back and forth doom!
TYPE O NEGATIVE
This is another one of my all-time favorite bands.  I have everything they ever did and will continue to buy each and every release! I have been told to check out Carnivore, but that band is more thrash, and I don't really like to go down that road.  Their music is very dark, very gloomy, very orgasmic (but that may be just me).  They have lengthened the songs, gotten away from commercial "hits" and have gone back to their roots which are more sinister and dark, just perfect for me!  A must have!
UNHOLY
Another pure doom band for you guys! "Rapture" is a damned good CD with death vocals and some keyboards but very slow and crunching melodies. I waited a long time for this disc, and I wasn't disappointed.
VADER
If you like your death metal crunchy and you want your ears to bleed, check out Vader from Poland. While they follow the classic death style of production with the gravelly vocals and intense riffs, this band also appeals to those who like to follow a tune. I have found the song "Freezing Moon" off of "Reign Forever World" appeals to doomsters, like myself. This album is pretty heavy and intense and I would recommend it highly.
WITHIN TEMPTATION
This is another band that is like Theatre of Tragedy with mostly a female singer but some male death vocals so it doesn't get too wimpy.  Plenty of violins and great melodies.  They offer "The Dance" and "Mother Earth" among others, go out and get these!
YEARNING
Yearning are doomy, very melodic, and slow with clean vocals while using crunchy guitars with a folksy feel and some flutes thrown in for good measure.  Pretty good stuff.
